Body, Mind, Life and Art

Wed Aug 1, 2007, 4:27 PM
As we browse DeviantArt we can see lots of different uses of the human body in art: some sensual pictures, artistic nude, couple's draws....

Please Open this [link] in a new window, it will improve the reading...

Over all these uses of the body, I think about why it is so attractive as artistic subject. The question is maybe simple and frequent, but the answer maybe not. In this context, if we consider the art as the expression of the emotions that the man-woman (as they are both important components of the human nature) in feel in front of the wonderfull world around us (that deffinition raises it over and different from design of handcraft) the human body comes to mind as the medium through which we interact between us and with our environment in this spatio-temporal scenary.

Through the body we are able to turn down our own reality into space-time; through our bodies we feel, we love, we hurt, we express our tenderness and we feel protected by others, etc. And through the body we can project out that wonderfull world we dream inside.

So, the body is a great subject to illustrate in the art the emotions produced by our interactions with others. And its a great way to express the whole and complex human nature in all it's depht: human in spirit, mind and body.

Let's take advantage of that, but with care... we, as artists (photographers, drawers and painters -digital art included-) should care to keep this expressive and symbolic value of the human body by avoiding to reduce the human nature to a physical object. So, I like a lot and find really aesthetically rich the body-relative art like the picture (from my gallery) shown above and other art such as seen in my faves, but I am a bit sad about some work (not very much here) in which the human nature is reduced to sex or physical love.... I agree to honor the sexual dimension of men and women as expression of the love, tenderness and respect which are beside it, but I think that showing sex by itself degrades the artistic/aesthetical/expressive power of the human body.

I don't write this as a legalist statement but thinking of generating some discussion about some topics that we -artists- should care, so please post any opinion or comment.
